Mayor launches rain water harvesting awareness campaign

Hyderabad, June 4 : GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain along with Deputy Mayor G Raj Kumar inaugurated an awareness campaign on Rain Water Harvesting at Institute of Engineers at Khairtabad here on Tuesday.

While addressing the gathering of Corporators of Central Zone, Colony Welfare Associations, Residential Welfare Associations, Non Governamental Organisations, the Mayor said that it was the time for every citizen to feel the responsibility to take an active participation to take up Rain Water Harvesting structures in their colonies / apartments / individual houses as the ground water is being exploited unabatedly and the water table level is fast depleting every year without much replenishment even there is a good rain fall.

The Mayor said that the purpose of conducting this awareness campaign is to increase the ground water level for well being of the citizens to have a clean, green and healthier atmosphere. The GHMC has come forward to join hands with the Residential Welfare Associations and Colony Welfare Associations duly funding 50 per cent to the individual houses and 70 per cent to the Residential Welfare Associations and others. He further requested the association members to come forward and to avail this opportunity to increase the ground water levels in the entire GHMC limits.

Majid Hussain said that he will be personally visiting the colonies and will interact with the members to take up such an innovative scheme for the well being of the citizens of the twin cities. The GHMC has fix up a target of 10,000 harvesting pits this year and hope that it will reach the expected target with the cooperation of the Associations. He also said that GHMC is the only Corporation who has taken up this type of scheme in the entire country and expects lot of cooperation and coordination from the Association to improve the ground water levels of the city.

Raj Kumar said that from the last 10 years the city has developed a lot and almost all of the roads have been laid of cement for which water flow to the underground has drastically low for which the ground water is being depleting and every need to take up the rain harvesting pits on priority basis.

Earlier Central Zone Commissioner D. Ronald Rose welcomed the dignitaries and briefed about the need of taking up rain harvesting pits. A Power Point Presentation has been presented by the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) Officials, the procedures and measures to be adopted for taking up rain harvesting pits for getting good results. An information brochure was released by H.W.Mayor, GHMC highlighting the methodology to be adopted for constructing rainwater harvesting pits and the same were distributed among the participants.

Corporators Kaleru Venkatesh, A Mahesh Yadav, Gyaneshwar Goud, M. Shyam Rao, Ayub Khan, Mohd. Ali Jameel, Cop-option member, Deputy Commissioners and Executive Engineers of Circle No. 7,8,9 & 10 and senior officials of HMWS&SB and GHMC have participated in the meeting. INN
