University of Hyderabad ranked second among India’s Top Biotech Schools

Hyderabad, June 25 : The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been ranked second among the top 20 Biotech schools survey for the year 2013. The parameters that were considered for ranking in the 9th BioSpectrum Top Biotech Schools Survey included Faculty, Industry Interaction, Infrastructure and Placements.

Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai is at No 1 position. University of Hyderabad is ranked No 2 followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi at No 3.

University of Hyderabad continued to be on top of the list for the infrastructure parameter, followed by Institute of Chemical Technology at second place and Tezpur University, Assam at third place. The Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics in the School of Life Sciences at UoH offers M.Sc – Biotechnology, integrated M.Sc-Ph.d in Biotechnology, M.Tech – Bioinformatics, and Ph.D – Biotechnology.

The survey found that in the last couple of years, the student community has realized the need to take up higher studies-post graduation and PhDs-if they are keen to enter the industry. Owing to the change in the mindset of students, the education market in private sector witnessed investments in expanding the research labs, so as to take up more research students opting for PhDs. The Biotechnology department has taken some steps to enhance the Industry- academia interaction. Recently the department organized one day symposium cum industry interaction by inviting Pharma and Biotech industry leading personnel where students got an opportunity to directly interact with them which helped them to plan for the future career in the industry. Some Pharma and Biotech companies regularly visit the department for the on spot selections.

However most of the students prefer to go abroad and join Ph.D program. Even some foreign Universities like National University Singapore (NUS) visited the department for the selection of their Ph.D program couple of our students was selected last academic year. It is proud to say the alumni of the department are part of some Pharma and Biotech companies in various capacities.

In industry-interaction parameter, it was University of Hyderabad which topped the table. Institute of Chemical Technology and Jawaharlal Nehru University stand at second and third places respectively.

In all, 43 institutes (14 public and 29 private) which are offering B.Tech, MSc/MTech, Ph.D courses in Biotechnology from nine states have participated in the 9th BioSpectrum Top 20 Biotech Schools Survey 2013.   INN
