Mayor reviews sanitation situation as staff continues strike

Hyderabad, Feb 9 : GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain on Sunday reviewed the sanitation situation in GHMC area as there is no sweeping and lifting of garbage for last two days due to strike by various unions. The meeting was attended by GHMC Commissiner Somesh Kumar, Special Commissioner Navin Mittal, Floor Leaders Diddi Rambabu (Congress) and Singi Reddy Srinivas Reddy (TDP), Zonal Commissioners and other officers.

The GHMC Commissioner informed that contract workers issue of wage hike has been taken up by GHMC. A revised report has been submitted to Govt. The file is under circulation on to the Finance Department. Municipal Administration Minister Maheedar Reddy has scheduled a meeting tomorrow with officers and Unions. He also pointed out that the issues of wage increase is linked with all Municipalities and more than 2 lakh outsourcing employees within the state.

Somesh Kumar said that GHMC has take many initiatives for welfare of the contract and regular workers like training, release of various entitlements like soaps and oils, issue of identity cards, EPF slips, uniforms etc. Responding to the comments of the Commissioner, GHMC, the Mayor said that GHMC has provided additional group personal accidental policy to Drivers & Labors (Cleaners) working on outsourcing basis under various agencies, providing additional insurance coverage of Rs.5.00 lakhs so as to provide Rs.10 lakh insurance on them.

The Commissioner said that a contingency plan has also been prepared and implementation started from yesterday. The Deputy Commissioner have been directed to ensure that one vehicle per corporator ward is engaged to clear garbage on war footing and ensured sanitation to see that citizens are not put to any inconvenience and health hazards. The sanitary field assistants (SFA) and drivers have been directed to report duty at once or to face serious disciplinary action. GHMC proposes to use provision of ESMA in case the cleaning of operations and functioning of officers are obstructed.

The Mayor, Commissioner and Floor Leaders of GHMC have appealed the workers and the union to cooperate and return to duties immediately to keep the city clean and avoid inconvenience to citizen and health hazard in town like communicable diseases, viral fever to the common man. They have also appealed to all the business establishments/shop owners not to litter garbage and other waste material on the roads and to co-operate with GHMC to maintain city clean.  INN
