Hyderabad, June 25 : Rajya Sabha MP of Congress party Nandi Yellaiah on Wednesday requested Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to complete the pending irrigation projects of Mahabubnagar district.
Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan here, Yellaiah informed that three major irrigation projects were started in 2005-06 to provide drinking water and irrgation for Mahabubnagar district. However, all the projects are yet to be completed and the people did not get any relief despite the expenditure of hundreds of crores. Citing examples, he said MG Kalwakurthi Lift Irrigation Project was aimed to provide irrigation facility to 3.40 lakh acres of land besides supplying 100 TMC of drinking water in 22 mandals of Kollahpur, Achampet, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy and Kalvakurthy. As against the total cost of the project of Rs 2,990 crore, the government has already spent Rs 2,601 crore. However, the people are yet to get benefit from the project. Further, he requested the Chief Minister to increase the water allocation by 25-40 TMC.
Similarly, Yellaiah said that the works on Rs 1862 crore- Jawaharlal Nehru Lift Irrigation Project are yet to be completed despite the expenditure of Rs 1735 crore. Likewise, Bheema Lift Irrigation Project is still incomplete although the government has spent Rs 1,438 crore out of Rs 1,555 crore. Both the projects were aimed to irrigation 2 lakh acres of land each.
In a letter written to the Chief Minister, Yellaiah requested him to complete the pending projects at the earliest. He said people of Mahabubnagar lack water for irrigation and drinking although two major rivers – Krishna and Tungabhadra flows through the district. INN
