Hyderabad, June 14 : Deputy Chief Minister Dr T Rajaiah on Saturday appealed to the people to donate blood to meet the requirements.
Speaking on the occasion of 11th World Blood Donors Day organized by the State AIDS Control Society here, Rajaiah said that blood donation was not up to mark due to illiteracy, myths and misconceptions. The State needs 8 lakh units of blood every year out of which only 7,96,000 units are being collected. He said that celebrating the blood donor’s day for one or two days was not enough to spread the awareness. He said such campaigns should be organized for at least 15 days for effective results. He said that the Telangana Government was committed for strengthening the health activities in the state including voluntary blood donation.
Health, Medical and Family Welfare Principal Secretary (Telangana) Shailendra Kumar Joshi said that all young and youth need to feel their responsibility and donate one unit of blood to minimize deaths of pregnant women during delivery because of non availability of blood at the time of crisis.
Health, Medical and Family Welfare Principal Secretary (Andhra Pradesh) LV Subrahmanyam in his address said that all the mothers enjoyed the pain for nine months and underwent the labour pain to give us birth and nurtured us with love and affection. We are at this stage because of their pain. Now it is our obligation and duty to protect all the young mothers by donating a unit of blood on our birth days.

Cultural programmes and folk shows were performed to entertain the audience on theme of Voluntary Blood donation. The organizations helped in the collection of blood were given mementos to inspire the potential donors
