Sitting HC Judge to head committee on Muslim, ST reservation

Hyderabad, June 13 : Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday announced that the State Government would constitute a committee headed by a sitting judge of High Court to study the implementation of 12% reservation each for Muslims and Scheduled Tribes in Telangana State.

Speaking in the State Legislative Assembly here, KCR admitted that there were lot of apprehensions with regard to the implementation of 12% reservation each for Muslims and STs. However, he said that the TRS Government would implement its promise at any cost. He said that the Telangana would adopt the Tamil Naidu and Karnataka model to implement the reservation.

Describing Telangana as the weaker section State, the Chief Minister said that it was legally possible to surpass the 50 per cent ceiling on reservation. Citing the example of Tamil Nadu, he said that the State was giving almost 69% reservation to different castes. An Act was passed by the State Legislature and the Centre was forced to make a constitutional amendment. He said if Tamil Nadu was permitted to cross the 50 per cent ceiling on reservation, then the Centre would have to permit Telangana to do the same.

KCR said that an all party delegation would be taken to New Delhi to press for the demand. Further, he hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who himself belongs to the Backward Classes, would facilitate constitutional amendment which would enable the Telangana Government to implement the promise of reservation.  INN
