Hyderabad, May 31 : The Telugu Desam Party on Saturday requested the State Election Commission to order fresh delimitations of wards of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) before beginning the process of municipal elections.
In a representation made to the SEC, TDP floor leaders in GHMC Singireddy Srinivas Reddy said complained of variation in the election wards of GHMC. “The population is not uniformly divided in each. While some wards posses only 18,000 population, others have more than 50,000 population,” he said. However, while providing beneficial perks and funds for development of wards, the authorities of GHMC, APCPDCL, HMWS&SB, HMDA and other department are providing equitable funds in all the 150 wards of the GHMC.
“The existing 150 wards of GHMC have been divided basing on the volume of the population recorded as per the 2011 Census in the GHMC, duly implementing the rule of reservation to BCs, SCs, STs and OCs. Subsequently, the elections wards in GHMC were increased from earlier 100 to 150 wards duly constituting the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation by merging 12 surround municipalities,” Singireddy said.
Singireddy said that the since GHMC elections should be held within three months before the date of retirement of the existing corporators, i.e., before December 4, 2014, as per Section 7 (1) of the HMC Act, 1955, the State Election Commission should initiate fresh delimitation of wards. INN
