GHMC to distribute 10 lakh saplings

Hyderabad, June 5 : GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar announced that a special engineering wing would be established for Urban Biodiversity in view of ensuing Metropolis World Congress.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Commissioner held a review meeting with the Urban Biodiversity (Parks) wing of GHMC in Panwar Hall GHMC Head Office here on Thursday. The Commissioner said that the proposed Engineering wing would be headed by an Executive Engineer and will be supported by two Deputy Executive Engineers and four Assistant Executive Engineers.

The Commissioner directed the Urban Biodiversity officials to distribute 2,000 saplings each to 150 Corporators which is coming around three lakh. Two lakh saplings will be distributed among educational institutions and one lakh in malls. The GHMC plans to plant 10 lakh saplings in its limits in the ensuing monsoon season. He directed the officials to plant date palm trees in heritage corridors.

Somesh Kumar said that special arrangements would be made for Metropolis and the corporation might spend more than Rs 50 crore for the event. Rs 50 lakh each has been allotted to Zonal Commissioners to take up the works relating to Urban Biodiversity wing.

The Commissioner also directed the officials to concentrate on development of 500 Colony Parks/Tree parks during the current financial year. He said the officials should plant trees that grow faster, give shade and require less maintenance. There should be flowering plants on all the main roads of Hyderabad. He directed the officials to coordinate with Railway authorities to take up plantation near Railway Stations in the GHMC limits.

In view of the rainy season, the Commissioner asked the officials to remove dead / decayed / dried trees to avoid accidents and complete the branch pruning operations immediately.

Additional Commissioner (Urban Biodiversity) N Chandra Mohan Reddy, Director Y Ramesh, Deputy Director S Mustafa and other staff of Urban Bio-diversity have attended the review meeting.  INN
