IT firms, HMDA to launch Hussain Sagar cleanup campaign

Hyderabad, Jan 17 : To keep Hussain Sagar Lake clean and green, a group of IT companies in association with HMDA (Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority), plan to do a Clean and Green drive at Banjara and Balkapur Nalas to protect the Hussain Sagar Lake.

The IT Corporates, along with a few concerned bodies-Banjara and Balkapur NGOs, plan to kick off the clean-up through a Solid Waste Management Awareness drive across a couple of Nala spaces on January 25. The awareness campaign includes, reach out to Slums and Communities on the banks of the Lake to educate about the importance of the Segregation of waste(Wet/Dry) through Street Plays and Flash Mobs; Approach the households to identify the challenges they have been facing in disposing of the waste; Speak up with Subraks (Rag Pickers) on their areas of concerns and the importance of wearing the necessary gear; Disposing of Pooja Collection Material in the respective stalls on the lake and also on disposal of E-Waste; Take up Plantation of Vegetable seedling in identified places with the help of residents; Setting up of Earthen pots along with HMDA officials in apartments and request folks residing to shred away their Bio-Waste in these pots to generate manure out of it; Approach Hospital/Temples/Shopping Complexes/Schools/ Colleges to spread awareness; Handing over Cloth/Plastic Gunny bags to the households; Take a rally out around the Lake and Talk to the vendors on Eat-Street and their customers to not litter away their food or food packets into the lake.

This drive is a joint effort by HMDA along with IT Corporates under “Clean Hussain Sagar Forum” to bring awareness among the residents and commercial vendors to support and save the Environment. Around 400 volunteers from 10 leading IT Corporates namely Infosys, CMC Ltd, TCS, Cap Gemini, CTS, HCL,ADP, GE, Mahindra Satyam, Pramati Technologies, Franklin Templeton, Karvy, NESS have come forward to enthusiastically participate in the Green drive. Plan is to educate the Slums through a series of Street Plays/Flash Mobs and setup an interesting mechanism to compost the bio-waste in the earthen pots and use the manure it generates for either growing Vegetables in the colonies or beautification through Roof Gardening.
