Hyderabad, Dec 17 : Professor Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate in Economics, will be awarded the honoris causa by the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on December 19th, Thursday. The event will be held at DST Auditorium on the University campus in Gachibowli. Prof. Sen will also deliver the first Hyderabad Lecture titled Are Coffee Houses important for Education?
Prof Sen is Thomas W. Lamont University Professor, and Professor of Economics and Philosophy, at Harvard University and was until 2004 the Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. Prof. Sen is also Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nalanda University. He is a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows. Earlier on he was Professor of Economics at Jadavpur University Calcutta, the Delhi School of Economics, and the London School of Economics, and Drummond Professor of Political Economy at Oxford University.
Prof Sen has served as President of the Econometric Society, the American Economic Association, the Indian Economic Association, and the International Economic Association. He was formerly Honorary President of OXFAM and is now its Honorary Adviser. His research has ranged over social choice theory, economic theory, ethics and political philosophy, welfare economics, theory of measurement, decision theory, development economics, public health, and gender studies.
Among the awards he has received are the “Bharat Ratna” (the highest honour awarded by the President of India); the Agnelli International Prize in Ethics; the Edinburgh Medal; the Brazilian Ordem do Merito Cientifico; the Eisenhower Medal; the Legion of Honour (France); Honorary Companion of Honour (UK); the George C. Marshall Award (US); the National Humanities Medal (US); and the Nobel Prize in Economics. INN
