Hyderabad, Dec 16 : The introduction of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, 2013, to bifurcate the State coincided with the death anniversary of Potti Sriramulu, who died due to hunger strike demanding a State for Telugu speaking people.
Sreeramulu is revered as “Amarajeevi” in the Andhra region for his self-sacrifice for the Andhra cause. He became famous for undertaking a hunger strike in support of the formation of an Indian state for the Telugu-speaking population of Madras Presidency and lost his life in the process. His death sparked public rioting and three days later, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru declared the intent to form Andhra State.
Andhra Pradesh’s Non Gazetted Officers (APNGOs) Association President Ashok Babu pointed out that it was bad luck to be introducing the Telangana Bill on the death anniversary of Sriramulu. INN
