AP registers record Hydel Energy in a month after a long time

Hyderabad, Aug 7 : Thanks to heavy rains and substantial inflows into Krishna and Godavari rivers particularly Krishna basin, the APGENCO has been able to generate a record generation of about 339.27 MU in the month of July 2013 compared to 159.56 MU in the same month, last year.

Disclosing the above details, Special Chief Secretary (Energy) and Chairman of APGENCO M Sahoo said that after a very long gap, all the major Hydel Power Plants in the state are in operation and all the units of Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar are in full swing. The AP Genco is expecting to cross the target of generating 6,755 MU of Hydel electricity this year.

Sahoo has has been continuously reviewing the status of rapid inflows into the reservoirs of Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar Hydel Power Stations, with Suresh Chanda, CMD/APTRANSCO, Munindra, Spl. Secretary, Energy and K Vijayanand, MD/APGENCO, D Prabhakar Rao, JMD/APGENCO and A Adhiseshu Director/Hydel.

With the abundant rain falls in the upstream states, Andhra Pradesh is fortunate to receive substantial inflows into the reservoirs of Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar, the two major Hydel Power Stations in the state. At present, about 3,81,369 Cusecs of water inflow is coming to Srisailam Reservoir and about 2,92,795 Cusecs of inflow is coming to Nagarjuna Sagar. After a long gap of about 4 years, both these major Hydel Power Stations have started generating power, to the optimum level.

Srisailam Hydel Power Station (both Left & Right bank stations) is generating about 1460 MW. The reservoir level at present is 883.8 ft against full reservoir level of 885 ft. All crest gates at Srisailam and 18 gates of Nagarjuna Sagar are lifted for flood management. 750 MW is being generated at Nagarjuna Sagar power station, the reservoir level 585.4 ft against full reservoir level of 590 ft.

He further said that Govt. of AP is contemplating to achieve additional hydel capacity of 410 MW by 2014-15 with construction of first unit of Lower Jurala 80 MW which is likely to be commissioned within two months i.e. by September, and the second and third units (each 80 MW) by July next year. The Nagarjuna Sagar tail-pond unit of 50 MW and Pulichintala’s 120 MW are expected to be completed by 2014-2015.

On 6th of August, in the year 2012, APGENCO recorded a total Hydel generation of about 3.96 MU only. But, this year, on the same day, APGENCO recorded a total Hydel generation of about 59.93 MU, he added. The Spl. Chief Secretary directed all the officials concerned to put all out efforts to fully utilise this cheaper power coming from the Hydel Power Stations and ensure interruption free power supply to all the consumers across the state.
