Hyderabad, May 4 : Expressing concern over the growing attacks on journalists Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation (APWJF) has demanded the State Government to take stringent action against those who are hindering the freedom of press.
Speaking on the occasion of World Freedom of Press Day, APWJF President Shahabuddin Hashmi along with APWJF General Secretary P Dilli Babu Reddy said that there should not be any restrictions on the freedom of press as per the United Nations General Assembly declaration. They expressed anguish over the growing attacks on journalists and lamented that even inquiry was not ordered in some cases.
During the recent past, the attacks on journalists have been growing and his could deprive the people from the right to know facts, they said.
If the Government takes stringent action against those who attack journalists such incident would not recur, they said.
They also demanded the Information and Public Relations Department to set up committees at all levels to check the attacks on journalists.
Hashmi and Reddy called upon the journalist fraternity to be part of programme to safeguard the freedom of press. INN
