Hyderabad or Cyberabad is a key national and international commercial and IT hub of India. However, rapid urbanization has resulted in many parts of the city to be disrupted by frequent flooding during the monsoon. The NDMA Guidelines on the Management of Urban Flooding released in September 2010 mandates the establishment of an urban flood early warning system based on local network of automatic rainfall gauges for real-time monitoring with a density of 1 in 4 sq km for all major cities. Further, catchment would be the basis for all flood disaster management actions.

It is therefore, proposed to hold a workshop on “Real-time Flood Early Warning System” for Hyderabad with the following objectives: To highlight the advantages of a real-time flood early warning system (case study of Mumbai); To identify the special needs and requirements of the stakeholders for a FEWS with special reference to Hyderabad; To identify the capabilities and support that the various agencies in Hyderabad can provide for the operation of the FEWS for Hyderabad andTo set in motion the process for the installation and operation of such a system for Hyderabad before monsoon 2014.
