Vizianagaram train accident victims identified

Hyderabad, Nov 3: All eight passengers of Bokaro Express who were run over by Vijayawada Passengner train at Gotlam village near Vizianagaram have been identified.

The deceased have been identified as Shweta Singh (33), Samhita Kumari (10), Shourya Kumar (2), T Alex (27), Tara Devi (34), Kartika Sahu (70), Lokender Kumar (28) and Adi Raju (60). While Lokender Kumar was a solder in the army, Shweta Kumar and her two children Samhita and Shourya were killed in the ghastly accident. They hailed from Aurangabad in Bihar.

The tragic accident occurred when passengers travelling in Bokaro-bound Alapphuzha-Dhanbad Express, stationed at Gajularega, got down in panic from the stationary train and jumped on to another track following rumours that smoke was coming out from S1 and S2 bodies. However, they were hit by speeding Rayagada-Vijayawada passenger train which came on the adjacent track.

According to Railway officials said Alappuzha-Dhanbad train, also known as Bokaro Express was on its way from Alappuzha in Kerala to Dhanbad in Jharkhand via Bokaro Steel City.

BJP demands high level probe into Vizianagaram train accident

Hyderabad, Nov 3: BJP National Vice-President Bandaru Dattatreyya on Sunday demanded that the Railway Ministry order a high level probe into the train accident in Vizianagaram district which claimed eight lives.

Dattatreyya also demanded immediate payment of ex-gratia of Rs 10 Lakhs to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 1 Lakh to the injured. Further, he said that one member from the family of the deceased should be provided with employment.

“It is quite painful and shocking that the passengers of the Bokaro Express met with a ghastly accident that took place on the eve of Diwali festival. The festival of lights has turned out to be a dark and gloomy day for the families of the deceased and injured in the accident. I express my heartfelt condolences to the family members of the deceased and the injured,” Dattatreyya said.

Train mows down eight passengers in Vizianagaram

Vizianagaram, Nov 2: At least eight passengers are feared killed and several others injured when they were run over by a train when they jumped from another train to an adjacent track at Gotlam village, about 10 KM from Vizianagaram, here on Saturday evening.

The tragic accident occurred when passengers travelling in Bokaro-bound Alleppey-Dhanbad Express, stationed at Gajularega, started getting down from the stationary train and jumped on to another track on noticing that smoke was coming out from S1 and S2 bodies. However, they were hit by speeding Rayagada-Vijayawada passenger train which was came on the adjacent track.

Those killed include women and children. Since many dead bodies lay mangled on the rail track, it is feared that the number of casualties may go up. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Senior officials have rushed to the spot along with relief teams. PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana, who hails from Vizianagaram district, spoke to higher officials over phone and asked them to provide necessary help to the injured and the families of those killed in the accident.
