Hyderabad, Aug 7: Winning next elections is not going to be an easy task for All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.

In 2009 elections, the MIM was able to increase its strength in the State Legislative Assembly from five to seven seats. However, retaining the same strength or increasing it further in 2014 elections would be a major challenge for the party. Political analyst say that although the party’s popularity is now at its peak, a few MIM opponents have done tremendous ground work in some Assembly constituency which would make MIM’s job to convince voters a difficult task.

MIM’s candidates Akbaruddin Owaisi (Chandrayangutta), Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri (Charminar), Ahmed Balala (Malakpet), Mumtaz Ahmed Khan (Yakutpura), Mohammad Maozam Khan (Bahadurpura), Muqtada Afsar Khan (Karwan) and Virasat Rasool Khan (Nampally) won the last elections with a comfortable majority. However, in 2014 elections the party is likely to face tough contest in at least four constituencies.

Ali Bin Ibrahim Masqati of Telugu Desam Party has emerged as a strong contender from Charminar constituency. Although he lost the elections to Pasha Quadri in 2009, he continued his activities in the constituency and is believed to have made a strong cadre-base. Although the TDP lack mass appeal in the Old City, Ali Masqati has his own set of followers who could counter MIM with vigour.

Similar is the situation in Nampally constituency where Feroz Khan of Congress has made a strong cadre-base at booth level. As a Praja Rajyam candidate, Feroz Khan lost to Virasat Rasool Khan by a majority of nearly 6,000 votes. Since the margin was not so huge in last elections, this time Feroz Khan aspires to win the elections with the Congress vote bank falling into his kitty.

The Chanchalguda constituency has two major aspirants – Muzaffarullah Khan of TDP and Amjadullah Khan Khaled of Majlis Bachao Tehreek who are likely to give a tough fight to the MIM. While Muzaffarullah Khan lost to Ahmed Balala in 2009, Amjadullah Khan Khaled won twice as corporator from Chanchalguda (now Azampura) division despite MIM’s wave. Since Azampura division falls in Malakpet constituency, Amjadullah Khan might have a stronger presence in the constituency.

Yakutpura constituency too is likely to witness a tough contest in next elections. With a strong base of followers, Majeedullah Khan Farhat of MBT is reportedly preparing to contest from Yakutpura to accomplish what he could not in the last three elections. The constituency is presently represented by Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, who has a good track record of serving the people since 1994.

The remaining three constituencies – Chandrayangutta, Bahadurpura and Karwan, as of now, have no strong contenders against the MIM. However, it would primarily depend on whether the MIM retains the same candidates for these seats or replaces them with new faces.
