Hyderabad, July 18 (INN): Congress senior leader and Forum for Utilisation of Godavari Waters chairman Marri Sashidhar Reddy said that the Mallanna Sagar was an avoidable project.
Making a power-point presentation at Gandhi Bhavan on Monday, Sashidhar Reddy said instead of taking up Mallanna Sagar, the Telangana Government should revive the Pranahita Chevella project with a capacity of 160 TMC. Stating that cultivation in Telangana lasts for only 120 days, he said 120 TMC water would be sufficient for irrigation. Of remaining water, 30 TMC could be used for drinking water purpose in Hyderabad while 10 TMC can be supplied to industries.
Describing Mallanna Sagar as completely unscientific, he said State Government should emulate the JLN project of Haryana which functions on pumping and sumps. By doing this, he said that government could save Rs. 25,000 Crore of public money and also avoid acquisition of farmers’ lands. (INN)
