Nagpur, July 30: Yakub Memon, the convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, was hanged at the Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday morning.
Yakub was hanged at 7 AM and was declared dead at 7.01 AM. Six persons, including Additional DGP Meeran Borwanar, Jail Superintedent Yogesh Desai, a medical officer and few others were present at the jail’s hanging yard.
On the final day, which also happened to be his 54th birthday, Yakub woke up at 3.30 AM, took bathe and offerred Fajr prayers. He refused to take breakfast and also denied medical check up saying he was completely fit. He met fellow inmates and apologised if he has ever hurt them. He was reportedly calm when brought to the hanging yard and walked up to the gallows. Yakub’s last wish of speaking to his daughter was fulfilled.
The constable, who executed 26/11 attacks convict Ajmal Kasab at Pune’s Yerawada jail in 2012, carried out Yakub’s execution.
The body was later handed over to the family members who brought it Mumbai for burial at Bada Khabrastan.
