Hyderabad, Feb 6 (INN): MIM senior leader and former MLA Mohammed Muqteda Khan alias Afsar Khan passed away here on Friday. He was 65 and is survived by wife, five daughters and three sons.
Afsar Khan was unwell for the past few months and was admitted in the Apollo Hospital for the past 20 days due to chest and lung related ailments. He breathed his last at about 4 AM on Friday.
He represented the Karwan Assembly segment for three terms. He was first elected as the MLA in 2003 by-elections which were necessitated due to the death of MIM MLA Syed Sajjad. However, Afsar Khan could not complete the full term due to dissolution of Andhra Pradesh Assembly by the then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The MIM re-nominated him from the Karwan seat and he won the elections in 2004 with a thumping majority. He retained the seat in 2009 Assembly elections.
However, he did not contest the 2014 elections due to ill-health. The MIM replaced him with Kausar Mohiuddin from the Karwan Assembly constituency.
Afsar Khan, a Graduate in Arts, was a successful businessman. He also served as the President of Mehdiptnam Traders Association and played a key role in the development of Mehdipatnam and surrounding areas as a commercial hub. He was also into the real estate business along with his brother Mohammed Meraj Khan.
The Namaz-e-Janaza was performed by his son Sohail Khan at Masjid-e-Azizia in Mehdipatnam after Friday prayers. Thousands of MIM workers, including MIM President Asaduddin Owaisi, other MLAs, former Mayors Mohammed Majid Hussain and Mir Zulfeqar Ali, ex-corporators, attended the Namaz-e-Janaza prayers. He was later buried at the ancestral graveyard in Murad Nagar.
Those who visited Afsar Khan’s residence to pay the last tributes include Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali. Congress MLCs Farooq Hussain and MS Prabhakar paid tributes on behalf of TPCC President Ponnala Lakshmaiah. Representatives of different political parties and organisations also paid their tributes to Afsar Khan.
According to family sources, the Fatiha-e-Sayum will be held at Masjid-e-Syed Ali Guda in Murad Nagar on February 8 after Namaz-e-Asar at 5 pm.
