Telangana Techies allege regional discrimination in IT jobs

Hyderabad, Nov 11 : The Telangana Information Technology Association has alleged that techies and other workforce from Telangana region have been facing discrimination on regional lines in the State.

According to a sample survey conducted by the TITA in 150 Projects and 50 IT companies in Hyderabad, only 15.2 per cent of the total workforce in the IT sector hails from Telangana region. While the employees from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts comprise 45 to 50 per cent of the workforce, the rest 35 per cent are from other States in the country.

TITA Founder and President Sundeep Kumar Makthala said that in Human Resources (HR) Departments, only 8-9 per cent people are from Telangana region while 66.5 of the top officials belong to the Seemandhra region and they are the ones who recruit people for different projects. “There is no doubt that they are biased towards people from their own region and this has been going on for years now,” he said. The companies selected for the survey includes large, mid-size and small.

Further, in indirect employment opportunities like contract jobs, only 6 per cent are from Telangana region while Seemandhra dominates with 60 per cent. In transport jobs, only 12 per cent are from Telangana region and Seemandhra’s enjoys the lion’s share with 49 per cent. Among Manpower Consultancies, only 7 per cent belong to Telangana region and 77 per cent are of people from Seemandhra region.

Sundeep Kumar said that the discrimination towards Telangana region was not confined to IT sector, but is largely prevalent in other sectors too. INN
