Maulana Azad’s struggle against communalism is still on: Dr. Aziz Qureshi

Hyderabad, Nov 11 : Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was an apostle of Hindu Muslim Unity. The Struggle, that he initiated against the communal divide is still on and relevant today, said Dr Aziz Qureshi, Governor of Uttarakhand, while addressing the Azad and National Education Day function at Maulana Azad National Urdu University here on Monday.

Dr Aziz advised Muslims not to extend begging bowl, but fight for their rights. He also said Hindu Muslim unity is the need of the hour. Highlighting the important role played by the Muslim clerics and seminaries (Madrasas) during the freedom struggle, he lamented those who describe the Madrasas as the nurseries of terrorism. These people needed to be shown the true history, he remarked. Throwing light on the exemplary services of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, he said that Maulana tried his level best to bring out the Muslims from the frozen state of mind in the aftermath of 1857’s first war of independence. He was a true leader meted with gross injustice. His services have been forgotten. Maulana Azad could not find a place among the photos of national heroes even in the government offices. However, this prejudicial attitude received a setback, off late, and steps have been initiated to give him his due share in the history of modern India.

Speaking about Urdu University, Dr. Aziz Qureshi, divulged that he was instrumental in materializing the dream of Urdu speaking population and turning it into the reality. Further, he said former MHRD Minister Arjun Singh made the decision which is having a far reaching effect in establishing central Urdu University, despite bureaucratic resistance. He advised the youth to read about the life and thoughts of Maulana Azad and try to inculcate his qualities.

UGC Chairman Prof. Ved Prakash in his address also advised the youths to follow Maulana Azad, as it will give them strength to face the challenges. He described Maulana Azad as the leading light of Hindu Muslim Unity, who always opposed the partition. He also expressed the desire that MANUU should establish a gallery on Maulana Azad which shall consists of Maulana Azad’s teachings and writings in pictorial and other forms.

MANUU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Miyan, in his presidential address, said that there are so many people who worked hard to establish Urdu University, but Dr. Aziz Qureshi’s contribution is unparalleled and unmatched.

Earlier, Dr. Khwaja Mohammad Shahid, Pro Vice Chancellor welcomed the guests and presented a brief report on 11-day long Azad Day Celebrations. Prof. S. M. Rahmatullah, Registrar extended vote of thanks. A book titled “Urdu Tadrees: Jadeed Tareeque aur Taqaze” (Urdu Teaching: Modern Methods and Requirements) written by Dr. Reyaz Ahmad was also released. Dr. Aziz Qureshi also inaugurated the building of School of Education and Training. Prof. Ved Prakash laid the foundation of Health Centre and inaugurated exhibition on Maulana Azad. INN
