Train mows down eight passengers in Vizianagaram

Vizianagaram, Nov 2: At least eight passengers are feared killed and several others injured when they were run over by a train when they jumped from another train to an adjacent track at Gotlam village, about 10 KM from Vizianagaram, here on Saturday evening.

The tragic accident occurred when passengers travelling in Bokaro-bound Alleppey-Dhanbad Express, stationed at Gajularega, started getting down from the stationary train and jumped on to another track on noticing that smoke was coming out from S1 and S2 bodies. However, they were hit by speeding Rayagada-Vijayawada passenger train which was came on the adjacent track.

Those killed include women and children. Since many dead bodies lay mangled on the rail track, it is feared that the number of casualties may go up. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Senior officials have rushed to the spot along with relief teams. PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana, who hails from Vizianagaram district, spoke to higher officials over phone and asked them to provide necessary help to the injured and the families of those killed in the accident.
