Mayor directs MEPMA to prioritise slums development

Hyderabad, June 4 : GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain has directed the officials of MEPMA to take up development of Infrastructure and Housing in Athapur, Shivarampally, Addagutta and Ismail Nagar slums on priority basis.

The Mayor along with MEPMA Mission Director Anita Ramchandran and other officials held a review meeting of housing, infrastructure and basic amenities for the development of slums in the GHMC limits on Tuesday in his chambers. He said that the above said slums should be taken up apart from the slums which have already been taken up for survey i.e., Narsimha basthi, Ambedkar Nagar, IDH Colony, New Indira Nagar, Kapra.

Majid Hussain desired to involve Self Help Groups and take their consent for Infrastructure and Housing facilities and during mapping while preparing the Detail Project Report (DPR). He also directed the officials to start the process of notification of those slums which are non-notified so far. Dr. Rayanna, Regional Coordinator for Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) opined that there is a need to denotify the slums which have already been developed. In this connection, the Mayor desired to gather Infrastructure information in slums so as to get the list of the slums which needs de-notification.

Dr. Rayanna said that Government of India has given instructions to form City Level Technical Cell with 6 people from the fields of Engineering, Town Planning, GIS, MIS, Community Coordinator under Rajiv Awas Yojana scheme, so that the development of slums can be taken up on priority basis without any hindrance. Reacting to the suggestion Smt. Anita Ramchandran, Mission Director, MEPMA, said that the proposals have already been sent to Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) for recruitment of professionals for the improvement of the slums.

Dr. Rayanna while briefing about the scheme of the Rajiv Awas Yojana said that in Tamilnadu, the Government of India is sharing 50 per cent of the contribution and the Tamilnadu State Government sharing 40 per cent of the contribution and only 10% is being shared from the beneficiary and the slums are being developed very rapidly. Responding to the suggestion H.W.Mayor directed the officials to put up the proposals to the Standing Committee on the same lines which has been done in Tamilnadu, so that Standing Committee can accord sanction and the development of slums can be expedited.
